Visuals and Social Stories
Visuals and social stories are highly effective in supporting children’s development, particularly in helping them understand communication, routines and social situations. Visual supports, such as symbols, pictures and prompts, provide clear and consistent information that can reduce anxiety and increase independence, especially for children who may find verbal instructions challenging. Social stories help children learn what to expect in different situations by breaking experiences down into simple, structured steps, supporting understanding of emotions, behaviour and social expectations. Together, these approaches build confidence, improve communication skills and help children feel more secure and prepared in both school and everyday life.
Please find below some further information regarding the benefits of using visuals, particularly for children who are neurodiverse but also as a universal support for all. You can also find a wide range of visuals and social stories that you can print off and use at home with your child. If you require any further visuals/ social stories or would like support with how to introduce these and utilise them at home then please do not hesitate to get in touch.
